Why Doesn't My Blog Qualify for Adsense?

A stick figure girl in a blue dress holding a blogger logo.
Yep, you got it. That's another often asked question that echoes through the Adsense forum lately. Some are posted in AdSense, and some are moved to the AdSense forum from the Blogger forum. But all of them nearly always have the same answer, BUT, there are several situations that apply here.

Situation #1 - Applying for a new AdSense Account

When you create a new blog on Blogger and want to apply for AdSense with it, you will probably find the "Earnings Tab" is not active, and you can't submit an application.

This is because the blog is either too new, or has too little content to be able to qualify for AdSense, so the ability to apply is on hold (by the Earnings Tab being temporarily disabled) until such time as the maturity of the blog (it's age) and the amount of contents on the blog deem it as being fit to apply with.

When the earnings tab is enabled, you'll be able to apply with your blog. This, however, does not mean your blog is approved yet, it just means that you can apply with it. Whether or not the blog is approved will not be decided until it goes through a 2-step approval process.

The first step allows you to login to an AdSense account and to place the code on your blog. Once you've placed the code on your blog, the second step will begin.

The second step is where AdSense will review your blog and all of it's contents to see if it's something suitable for them to monetize. During this time, you won't see any ads on your blog. You won't see any ads unless AdSense approves it during this second step. Once the review is complete (this review can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks) AdSense will send you another email, but you may notice ads showing before you actually get the email.
A boy and girl stick figure wondering when something will happen.
So, when does it become enabled?

Well, that's open for discussion really. Nobody knows because there is no information posted about what will cause it to become enabled. Having spent enough time in the AdSense forum you come to the conclusion that it can take several months before that happens. If one thinks about it logically, in a couple of months, how much content would you post? The average blogger probably posts twice a week at least, so two posts a week times 8 weeks equals about 16 posts, but most of the time, what we're seeing is the blogs need more than that in terms of content amounts, unless the posts are very long, so shoot for somewhere around 20 to 30 posts. The more content in each post, the more likely you'd be accepted with a lower number of posts. (Don't add words just for the sake of adding words. The posts have to be useful.)

If your blog is almost a few months old, or is a few months old and you have at least that much content, you should be getting pretty close to seeing your Earnings Tab enabled.  Unless ... well there is another requirement that Adsense has for just about all of the Asian countries, and that is the fact that sites should be six months old, so some of you may have to wait longer than a couple of months.

Situation #2 - Adding a Blogger Blog to a Fully Approved AdSense Account

This occurs when you already have an AdSense account that's approved to display ads on your own websites, or already approved to display ads on Blogger URLs (blogspot URL).

Even though your AdSense account is already approved for another blog, your new blog still has to qualify to display ads on it, so ... the earnings tab is disabled, the same as if you were applying for a new blog.

This makes sense because no advertiser wants their ads displaying on sites with one post, that's a few hours old. The idea is pretty much the same as in Situation #1 - when your blog is suitable (in terms of age and content amount) the Earnings tab will become active and you can link your blog to your already approved AdSense account.

You will not have to go through another review at that time. Your account is already approved, so the ads will begin to show once you can link it to your AdSense account.

Situation #3 - Your Blog uses a Custom Domain

In some cases, the Earnings tab may not be available when you want to apply because your blog is already using a Custom Domain. In this case, if your site is old enough, and has enough content you can apply at the AdSense homepage with your domain instead. Be aware that if your site is really new and hasn't much content, it's likely to be rejected, even if you can apply.

Your account will go through the same 2-step process as noted above in Situation #1. If it's approved and the ads begin displaying, the Earnings Tab should eventually become enabled, but even without the earnings tab, the ads will still work fine and still accrue earnings.

Situation #4 - You Already have an AdSense Account approved through YouTube or AdMob

You can't place AdSense ads on a blogspot URL if your account was approved through YouTube or AdMob. Not without upgrading that Host Account.  And to upgrade that Host account, you can't use a blogspot URL. Please see "Applying for a Host AdSense Account Upgrade" on this page for instructions on how to upgrade.

    1. It can take up to six months for a blog to become eligible to apply. It depends on where you live. See the qualifications for Adsense in the help center:

    3. Well unfortunately, if you're waiting for the blog in your profile to become active then that's a problem. Adsense doesn't allow blogs with adult contents.

  3. Hi, I own a blogger blog with a custom domain, I opened it 3 weeks ago and it deals with entertainment news, It currently has 90 posts and 130,000 pageviews, but still the sign up for adsense button in the earning tab is still disabled, how long will i have to wait for it to be enabled? I stay in Africa will the 6 months old site rule me?

And due to the fact I own a blogger blog with a custom domain will my adsense account be a hosted account or non hosted?

    1. I don't think the six months applies to Africa, unless they have changed that, but 3 weeks usually isn't long enough no matter where you live. It can take a couple of months for the application option to become active.

If you have a custom domain, you can apply a www.google.com/adsense with your domain, instead of the earnings tab. Using a domain to apply would mean you have a standard adsense account if it is approved, not a host-Adsense account.

  6. But i want to ask this honest question, is it possible for someone blogging on sport's niche not to copy and paste ?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Certainly it's possible. Why wouldn't it be? It's no different than any other niche. If you watch the games, you write your own opinions, you don't copy from other websites. If you know information about the players, you write what you know yourself, you don't take someone else's information and change a few words ... it's still not yours, it's someone else's.

I see no reason why anyone cannot write their own contents. You get paid for what YOU provide, not for what others provide.

Earn the money using your own knowledge.

How do you see blogging as any different than going to work at a job somewhere? The company you work for isn't going to pay you for someone else's work, they expect to pay you for your work. You work, you get paid. You stand around watching someone else work, you don't get paid.

If you want to earn, you work. That's how it is in business. That's how it is in life too.

    1. Your blog needs to be six months old, and you have contents not allowed by Adsense. You have adult content (images), and hacking content, images you don't own the copyright for (copyright violations), you have contents written in Tamil (which is not supported by Adsense), you have "paid to" sites information, you have pages with just videos (including adult videos) ... there is so much wrong with your site that I don't think you can make it suitable for Adsense at all.

You should look for another advertisers to use on that website.

    1. You can't submit a blogspot URL to upgrade a host account. You need to submit a top level domain instead.

If you purchase a custom domain for your blog, then you could apply for the Host account upgrade.

  10. or may i cancel that adsense permanently and open a new one with another email because i see this one for admob wont help me

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If you aren't monetizing any apps using AdMob, and you have the option in your AdSense account to cancel it, then you'd have to cancel both Adsense and AdMob and then reapply.

However, if you are monetizing apps with AdMob, then apps that are already in use by people will no longer collect any earnings, since the ad code would be from a cancelled Adsense account.

And of course, there is no guarantee that they would approve your blog either, so if it's rejected, you'd have no Adsense account at all.

And from your other comment (which I didn't publish) ... no, I do not "chat by email" about anything related to Adsense. All advice is given publicly, either by comments like this one, or on the AdSense forum.

Private emails are just a bad idea.

    1. It would think there is little to no chance for the blog to be approved. I'm sorry to have to say that, but AdSense doesn't accept sites that are built using contents from other websites. I checked only 3 of your posts, but three is usually enough when they all appear copied from other sources. I would guess that much of your content isn't written by you, but copied.

    1. No, Adsense doesn't use pageviews or visitor numbers in their decisions.

Blogs should be several months old (in Asian countries, it is six months) and should have somewhere around 50(ish) posts with original contents, and the person applying needs to be 18 or older.

  13. Hello Gracey, I have been blogging with this URL www.dicksoneyins.blogspot.com and it's been some 6 to 7months by now. Honestly, if truth be told, I work majorly and tirelessly on content myself but sometimes do some copy, edit nd past as the case maybe with source quoted. The issue here is, my earning tab keeps say "your blog doesn't qualify for adsense yet". Can you please do a check on my blog and possibly tell me if there is any thing am doing wrong? Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's usually okay to quote a source (with attribution) if you are only using a sentence or two, but not to copy several paragraphs as a quote.

I'm not sure why your blog would not yet be eligible. Whether you can apply or not is based on the age of your blog and how much content you have, so it should already be eligible.

What you should do is remove any posts that have more copied and quoted contents than it has original contents. Too much copied content in a post is about the same as having a full post of copied content.

Make sure your blog doesn't contain any type of adult content, and doesn't have things like violent contents or gruesome images. If you use images that you don't own the copyright for, make sure you have permission to use them, and if you have permission that you attribute the images to the owner.

I assume you are 18 or older because if not, that would be another reason why it's not enabled. You have to be 18 to sign up for Adsense.

    1. It's pretty hard to review a site that's in a language you can't read. The translator doesn't actually translate word-for-word, but what I can tell you is that recipe blogs are hard to get approved unless they contain a lot more information on each page than just the recipe.

What I see that I think is good about your recipes is that you seem to be creating the food (preparing it) yourself and taking pictures as you go through the steps, and you're describing the steps in words. That's a good step in the right direction.

You might want to add some sort of anecdote, or story about the recipe ... something that makes it personal. How your family uses it, or if it's eaten on special occasions or something like that. The more "story" you include with your recipes, the better chance it would have of being approved. (here's an example http://www.jgraceystinson.ca/2014/12/isabelles-mild-italian-meatballs.html <--- my mother's meatball recipe and it includes a family story with it. This is the sort of thing that would be good to find on a site with recipes.)

And of course, you need for the recipes to be original - your own, or your family's creations. If they aren't original, or you've used a recipe (like from a cookbook or website) and adapted the recipe by changing some of the ingredients, make sure to cite the original recipe.

    1. Hi Princy - it could be that you are using a custom domain rather than a blogspot URL. If your site was approved, you'll still earn money from it, but you'll have to check your earnings by logging into your AdSense account. Eventually the earnings tab will become enabled, but until it is just login to your AdSense account to check on earnings.

    1. Hi Mahendran - I'm surprised the earnings tab is enabled. You don't really have enough content yet, the blog isn't old enough yet, and you're using a custom domain. All of those things would normally prevent signing up from the earnings tab.

I would expect if you applied now, you might end up being rejected, but that doesn't mean you can't resubmit it later if it is rejected.

    1. Hi Paul, thanks for your question.

It isn't just a matter of how long it takes. For anywhere it's still a couple of months, but the qualifying factors are more than how old the site it. It's also a matter of how much content there is on the site.

Right now, your site appears to have only 2 posts (they'd be looking for more like 50ish). And, your posts have to contain original content - you can't use content copied from other websites, or newspapers or books. You have to write it all on your own.

And you can't write about sex, which Adsense would consider adult content (which is prohibited).

    1. Yes, you would need to wait six months, but your blog will not qualify. You can't give away products for free that require a purchase. Photoshop is not free. It's never been free. Giving away a hacked or cracked version of it is called piracy. That's illegal.

AdSense won't support anything that's not considered legal.
